💥The Power of the Pause on the Weekends ⏸️

Happy Sunday! I hope you are embracing rest and self care today.

What did you do this weekend? My daughter, who is a certified sports medicine fitness trainer asked me, “What kind of squat did you include in your routine today?” I told her, “Diddly!” Seriously though, I didn’t do anything that required heavy lifting or brain effort this weekend. I read, caught up on a few shows, stretched lightly and walked, and made some kitchari to enjoy later tonight!

Monday- Friday, during the hustle of professional life, weekends are often viewed simply as a brief pause before the rush of a new week begins. However, redefining weekends as a vital time for rest and self-care can transform our work and personal life balance. I want to explore why stepping away from work on weekends isn’t just a break, but a strategic necessity for long-term success and well-being.

Recharging: The Essential Weekend Reset

The concept of resting over the weekend goes beyond catching up on sleep. It’s about mental and emotional rejuvenation, which are key elements that fuel our productivity and creativity come Monday. Engaging in activities that disconnect us from work stresses, such as nature walks, reading, or spending quality time with loved ones, can reset our stress levels and prepare us for upcoming challenges. This intentional downtime is crucial for maintaining a sustainable pace and preventing burnout, which I know many of us are afraid of reaching.

A Personal Recharge Ritual

Creating a weekend ritual designed to your unique personal needs and joys can significantly enhance the quality of our rest. This might mean setting a digital detox period, during which emails and work-related communications are100% firmly off-limits, or it could involve a favorite hobby that you reserve only for these days. The idea is to establish practices that reliably replenish your energy reserves. For some, this might be a quiet morning with a book, for others, a vigorous bike ride or a cooking session. Listen to what your body is telling you, not your mind about what you ‘should’ be doing! The key is consistency, these rituals can become bookends that anchor your weekend and allow you return to work truly rested and raring to go.

The Science of Stepping Away

Research underscores the importance of taking regular breaks from work for maintaining high levels of peak performance. Neurologically, stepping away from routine tasks allows our brain to process information differently, often leading to enhanced problem-solving and creativity. By dedicating weekends to non-work activities, we give our minds the space to wander and process, which can lead to creative breakthrough ideas and solutions that wouldn’t normally surface amid the constant noise of work demands.

Preparing for Monday on Sunday Evening

While it’s essential to keep most of the weekend work-free, a small ritual on Sunday evening can help ease the transition into the workweek. This doesn’t mean jumping into emails or projects but rather setting a calm moment to plan the week ahead. Outlining major goals and tasks can make Monday feel less daunting and more structured, which helps maintain the relaxation gained over the weekend. For me, it means just jotting down my top meeting times and priorities for the day. After I put it on my desk, that’s it, two minutes tops spend on prepping for my Monday.

I get that it’s easy to overlook the role that rest plays in sustaining our performance and health. We somehow have trained our bodies to keep moving and not rest, when the opposite should be true! By reclaiming weekends as sacred time for rest and self-care, we not only enhance our work output but improve our overall life satisfaction. I know without a doubt that after this weekend I will be ready to tackle the Monday workday and rest of the week with high energy and enthusiasm. My question is, “Will you?”

Here’s a couple of other questions I would like to explore to keep the conversation going. How do you disconnect and recharge on the weekends? What rituals help you return to work, invigorated? Let’s share new ideas on social media and inspire each other to embrace a more balanced approach to our professional and personal lives.

As always, I appreciate your reading, and hope that you will share this newsletter with anyone you think might get value out of it. I'd love to hear from you! Find me on social to continue this conversation.

Here's to your rest and ultimate success! 💕 Bobby

Well, Hello There and Happy New Year! By the time mid-January rolls around, I’ve usually already abandoned a few resolutions. Quietly, intentionally, without guilt. Not because I lack discipline, but because experience has taught me something most professionals won’t admit out loud: many resolutions sound responsible yet actively work against the life and leadership we’re trying to build! End-of-year clarity doesn’t come from doubling down. It comes from noticing what we’ve already stopped...

Happy Sunday! I need a vacation. It seems like lately I am always saying that! So I finally got one. Not just a quick trip back home to see family, where my itinerary was jam packed with functions. Or not just the quick weekend getaway, where packing and hopping on a plane takes up more time than the actual relaxing does. I actually just got back from spending 5 days on a glorious Caribbean island with beautiful weather, sand, and the sea. And I completely checked out. No travel pass on my...

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Just a few days ago I posted something to LinkedIn on strategy. Someone commented asking if I thought that there were fundamental concepts that all leaders share. Yes! Strategy isn’t just a corporate buzzword, or something scribbled on a whiteboard at the annual retreat. It is the actual foundation of decision-making, the quiet force that guides where energy, resources, and human resource flow. While every organization has its own unique challenges, there are...
