Hey there! Here's just the boost you need to get through March working from home, whether you are a remote employee or an entrepreneur.
As more of us embrace remote work or find ourselves in hybrid work environments, staying focused and productive outside the traditional corporate office setup, especially this time of year, has become a crucial skill that I know I need more help with! Here’s a deeper look at some effective strategies to enhance your work-from-home experience, and get through to the Ides of March.
Setting Up Your Space for Success
The physical space where you work significantly impacts your productivity and mental well-being. It's not just about having a desk and a chair; it's about creating an environment that promotes focus and minimizes distractions. Invest in ergonomic furniture to support your posture and reduce physical strain. Neck tech and carpal tunnel syndrome are real! Consider the lighting, natural light is ideal, but if that’s not possible, make sure your lighting setup is bright enough to keep you awake but not so harsh that it causes eye strain. If you need to, invest in a pair of blue light blocker glasses.
Noise levels are another consideration. Some people thrive in silence, while others prefer some background noise. If you find yourself easily distracted by household noises, noise-canceling headphones could be a worthwhile investment. Or if you are like me, soft music or a tv on in another room helps me feel like I am not in isolation and allows me to get my work done. You can also personalize your space with plants or art to make it more inviting and stimulating. I have a salt lamp on my desk, next to my Stanley cup full of sparkling water and my calendar with a notepad to write on to round out my space.
Adjusting Your Schedule for the best Productivity
One of the perks of working from home is the flexibility it offers, but this can also be the biggest pitfall if your schedule is not managed properly. Start by understanding your natural work rhythms. Are you a morning person, or do you find your stride in the afternoon? Support your natural inclination and your most demanding tasks with these peak times.
Breaks are also vital. Just like in an office environment, stepping away from your desk can refresh your mind and reduce fatigue. Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, working for focused intervals followed by short breaks, to maintain concentration without burning out. I, for one, stand up and move around every hour on the hour based on a notification from my watch, and it helps me feel more energized throughout the day.
Improving Remote Team Communication
Remote work requires that you use excellent communication, even more than ever before. Being out of the physical office, or working by yourself, shouldn't mean being out of the loop. Proactively reach out to colleagues and managers regularly for both 1:1 and group check-ins. Use Zoom or Teams video calls for more complex discussions to mimic face-to-face interactions and encourage team building.
Tools and platforms that support collaboration, like Slack, Trello, or Asana, can help keep projects on track, visible to all stakeholders, and hold you accountable to complete tasks on time. Clear, consistent, and concise communication helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps everyone aligned on expectations and progress. Working from a home office can get lonely, reach out to people to connect!
Continuing Your Professional Development at Home
Remote work shouldn't stop your professional development. Seek out online learning opportunities and virtual workshops relevant to your field. Make sure you discuss your career goals with your manager and explore paths for advancement, even if they're unconventional due to your remote status. I recently enrolled in two accredited International Coaching Federation programs, Executive Coaching and Organizational Development to obtain my accreditation as a professional certified coach.
Also, consider how you could expand your professional network remotely. I frequently engage in contributing to LinkedIn articles in the leadership industry group. I also participate as a speaker in the Boston Chapter of SCORE by holding webinars for their audience. Gaining knowledge and seeking out connections can provide support, insight, and potential career opportunities.
Sometimes moving to a remote or work-from-home environment presents unique challenges, but with the right mindset and strategies, it also offers many opportunities for personal and professional growth. By creating an effective workspace, optimizing your schedule, maintaining clear communication, and actively seeking growth opportunities, you can not only adapt to but thrive in this new norm.
